Hi Rod
Roo carcasses in the lake are normal. They frequently swim across the lake and
some drown. There was one living on Springbank Is last time I was there several
years ago. You could contact Chris Davey or Peter Fullagar for information
about the Spinnaker Is Silver Gull counts and perspective on deaths of adults
at the nesting colony. cheers

Subject: Lake Burley Griffin - Pied Cormorants and Silver Gulls.
There were 3 Pied Cormorants just off the eastern side of Black Mountain
Peninsula while I was paddling yesterday, and again today at least 3, possibly
4 near Springbank Island.
Has anyone recently done a count of the Silver Gulls around the lake?
Huge numbers presently on Spinnaker Island and the waters thereabouts, my
estimate would be a thousand plus. I also counted 50 dead birds (in addition
to a dead kangaroo) over a 60 metre stretch on the island, adult birds as well
as chicks and juveniles, plus several more dead lying at the waters edge. Is
this a normal pattern for a breeding gull colony?
Cheers
Rod
