The dove shown being passed around the classroom on ABC tv this morning is a Laughing Dove (‘turtledove’), an introduced species that will be unfamiliar to people in eastern Australia.  It is very common in much of the sw quadrant of Western Australia, as shown by the profusion of eBird records.  More than enough for a couple for each classroom if the promotional ABC item gives rise to a turtledove craze among younger viewers.
