Feral Pigeons

Morning Geoffrey,

There is a small colony of up to about 15 birds under a bridge on Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen near St Michael's primary school and a slightly larger group under the Gungahlin Drive overpass bridge over Ellenborough Street, also in Kaleen. These groups seem to vary in numbers at times and may even be "related". The other place where I regularly see pigeons is under the Cotter Road overpass on the GDE (if it is still called that at this point) near where the road crosses the Molonglo River. I am usually traveling at the speed limit so can't really count the numbers of birds present.

You got in first Rosemary! Quick off the mark!

There also used to be a roost in Forde under a bridge on Horse Park Drive. I will check out what has happened since the major road works there.

Roosts under the bridges across Ginninderra Creek for Florey Drive, Macgregor and Ginninderra Drive, Flynn, Geoffrey.

There used to be/still is? a loft in NE Macgregor from which flights would swirl daily.

I am engaged on a little project on the local feral pigeons.  I’m interested in any reports of regular feeding aggregations or major roosting or nesting sites.

At the moment we are not seeing the large flocks we used to get around the open areas and on powerlines at Jerrabomberra Wetlands NR.  There are a few flocks to be seen on lawns in the parliamentary triangle.

The flock regularly seen flying over south Canberra is probably based at a local loft i.e. privately owned.  There are probably similar flocks in North Canberra, which is the home of an active pigeon racing club.

Does anyone on this chatline keep pigeons?
