Morning all,
At 0620 this morning, for the first time in over a week, a Pacific Koel
was calling just outside my GBS area in Kaleen. Nothing too unusual with
this but what did surprise me was that he was giving the "Koel" or
"Coo-ee" call for only the second time in this current breeding season.
The first and only time that he gave this call was when he arrived back
in town in week 44 (late October) and only on one day. All other calls
have been the usual "Wurra Wurra" and assorted shrieks and whistles,
some of which I have never heard before.
I think this will be one of the last days for the local koels before
they head off to places unknown in the island to the "north". Calling
locally has been rapidly dropping over the last couple of weeks, with
only males calling intermittently.
