I also think it is a Red-capped Plover. I would think that the most likely. They are a fair bit smaller than the 2 Sand-Plover species but we can’t tell that
from the photo. But it doesn’t look chunky enough, and there is too much reddish colour on the back and wing coverts for them. Also I think the part neck collar fits Red-capped Plover best.

Hi Julie, if you thought it was a red-capped plover it probably was. A juvenile looks much like that as do the juveniles of some other plovers.

I saw this bird at Shoalhaven Heads Inlet yesterday. It was feeding alone on the sand flats. It was a long distance away and at the time I assumed it was a Red-capped
Plover. On looking at the photos I'm now not so sure.
Lesser Sand-Plover came to mind, but I've only seen them once and I'm generally very inexperienced with coastal birds.
Any help would be appreciated.
A highlight of the short trip was a
Beach Stone-Curlew in the same area. (I'll add some photos to Flickr when I edit them).
