I took Martin’s advice and observed upwards of 50 Freckled Ducks – I lost count.  Also present: several Chestnut Teal, a few Wood Ducks, several Australasian Grebes, two Little Pied Cormorants, two Little Black Cormorants, a White-faced Heron.

There were also about four birds which sort of looked like Lathams Snipe, but they didn’t look quite right.  They were foraging just off-shore poking their long bills into the mud.  Their colour was basically sandy with strong black stripes across their heads and down their backs and whitish on the breast and belly; shortish tails.  I’m not sure what they were.

Also saw a White-headed Pigeon.

We took the scenic route to Mallacoota yesterday: coming via Moruya Heads South.  While there I took a quick glance at Newstead Pond (off Hazel Rd).  There were about 20 Freckled Duck there - which I had not sen in the area on previous visits.  Also a Nankeen Night Heron flew in.  The pond has lotsa water and is well worth a visit.
