Thanks Martin for clarifying probabilities. It looks like a tragedy all round.  A fox could have got dad ... very sad. L

With the Whiskers Creek family it is usually 34+/-2 days from hatching to leaving the nest.  I am very surprised that they were on their own in the nest - I have never seen that and assume that "something" bad happened to Dad.  I have seen Evil Incarnate (aka  a Pied Currawong) swoop the nest and get dissuaded by Dad, or, if things get really bad' Mum also flies in from her roost to help in the defense.

Our two eagerly-awaited tawny frogmouth chicks first appeared from under dad on Sunday Dec 2nd. Last Friday morning 7th they were sitting in the nest
on their own, no parent in sight. We were then out all day and on our return the nest was empty. No sign of the family since. Could the chicks have moved away so soon or could that lurking jabberwocky the pied currawong have taken them?? Libby

Elizabeth    You were interested in any sightings of these since the nesting event.   Snapped just now in the backyard sitting just above head height in an old Dawson River Callistemon.  (A durable species.  It was quite old when I moved here 30 years ago.)  The nearer bird is distinctly smaller than the other so I suppose one of the recent young.  A hunting fmouth flew close over my head the other night, which happens occasionally.  They are noiseless fliers like owls.
