Hi Ryu (and others interested in SCC roosts over the weekend).

Sorry to report there were zero SCCs roosting in the gums near Watson Pottery. There were plenty of SCC in the area. I estimated 188, which easily fits with other observations at this site, but this time they flew over and did not settle in the gums there at all. I was surprised as it is well known roosting area, but I guess not in favour right now. Late in the survey I saw flocks coming over Watson again, heading to old Watson. My guess is they were  the same birds returning from a communal flight and going in to roost at the dog park/Irvine St area. If so, this means the flight was 30 mins. (In the past I have noted the communal flight after settling in the roosting trees as 6 mins.) I hope someone was over in the Irvine St area to count them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what others counted.

Megan

Protocol: Stationary
Comments:     Purpose of survey was to count Sulphur-crested Cockatoos at this roost site. Very cold.
9 species

Crested Pigeon  5
Galah  8
Little Corella  21
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo  188     Counted 18 individual birds them estimated groups of 60, 30, 20 20, 30, 10. All these SCC and the Little Corellas flew north over site at 4:50pm. They had been gathering in the area for 35 mins before the communal flight eg, on footpath, trees and powerlines. Please not that none roosted along Aspinall St. At 4:58 30 SCC flew over site. This group not counted for survey purposes as it is likely they are some of the same birds passing over again. ? At 5:10pm groups of 60 and 30 flew over North Watson, towards Old Watson. My guess is these are the birds I counted coming back to roost at Irvine St, Watson or another site.
Australian King-Parrot  12
Eastern Rosella  3
Red-rumped Parrot  2     Heading towards McDonalds on Stirling Ave (where they roost in pines).
Noisy Miner  3
Australian Magpie  3
