Thanks John,
A little correction though. My “very useful little book gives the 2006 GBS rank
as 122” is actually built on the GBS data from July 1981 to June 2002. Therefore the bulk of the data is for last millennium. It does not contain data for 2006, (the second
edition 21 year report 2006 is the same as the 2003 with only a small number of minor text improvements and another reference still stops at data for 2002). Other big changes at that time there were no breeding records for Koels. As I have commented many times,
the book is very overdue for an update.

Subject: FW: [canberrabirds] Superb Parrot flock in Kambah
Good indeed to hear that Superb Parrots seem to be moving into the south of Canberra in large numbers. It seems not long ago they were something to be excited about even
here in the remote north of Canberra but now they are virtually commonplace, particularly around Yerrabi Pond. I report them almost every week now along Ginninderra Creek. Marnix has just reported a large flock of 25 over Gungahlin Town centre.
It is gratifying indeed to compare our own COG records. Philip Veerman’s very useful little book gives the 2006 GBS rank as 122 which means that in 2006 most COG observers
would not have seen one. The COG CBN Annual Bird Report for 2012-13 GBS list ranks the SP at 53 while the 2016-17 Report ranks SPs at 51. The 12-13 Report describes SPs as ‘Uncommon Visitors’. The 16-17 Report describes them as ‘Common Breeding Sumer Migrant’.
All this is very satisfying.
But I do have a question for my more learned ornithological colleagues. Does this population shift really mean a population increase or don’t we know yet? It is, I believe,
still declared ‘vulnerable’ in ACT and NSW.

I was outside hanging clothes on my hills hoist about 30 minutes ago. Heard a parrot noise (actually my first thought was a Cockatiel). Luckily the noise came
closer and I looked up to see a flock of Superb Parrots fly almost directly over me. Flying fast at about 50 metres high, as a fairly tight bunch going westerly. I could wonder where to. I counted a few times and came up with that there was either 11 or 12
(I put 11 in my GBS chart). This is a first for my GBS site. Flock included M & F, perhaps an about even mix but too quick to be sure of that. I and John Leonard have seen them in Hughes and Federal golf course and no doubt others . These along with my occasional
sighting of them on Jenke Circuit and Sandra’s observations show things have changed since The GBS Report which indicated it as almost absent in southern Canberra. Something to be happy about.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Musk Lorikeet, Wanniassa (and Superb Parrots)
a single bird sighted at Wanniassa Hills Primary School. A usual visitor at this location when the ironbarks are in flower. The ironbarks are just starting to come into flower there and at Erindale ovals... Very distinctive high-pitched
call.
Also Superb Parrots around Wanniassa every day - I hear them frequently and get them over my GBS daily. This morning saw three at Wanniassa Hills Primary, and 16 on a walk from the school down to Erindale, including eight in one tree, six
in another tree.
