Yes I know a recording would help verify my report of the Sooty Owl. How were these things verified in the past before recording devices? I tried to record it when it was close to my house but I fumbled everthing including tripping
the sensor light on the back verandah. I saw the dark shadow fly off but I know that doesn’t count as a sighting. I will keep trying to record it but it is now very distant.
‘Falling Bomb’ is the traditional description of SO’s distinctive descending call. It is I believe sufficiently distinctive to be determinative.

I suspect that a recording of the calls in question (I think most phones include a record app) would be fairly acceptable.
I have no idea how I would write a description of the call of the Sooty Owl as it is available from the P&K app.
