I have just been told that the Flying Fox camp at Mallacoota is 11.8 ha in size this year. That is probably the biggest it has ever been. In contrast the camp at Commonwealth Park seems
to be (from Google Earth) about 0.6Ha. The DELWP officer who has measured the Mallacoota camp has said its difficult to count the bats on fly-out as they use many routes but there are 10s of thousands.
The camp is much bigger than it was in early Februar, possibly because the Bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera) is now at peak and spectacular blossoming. The hillside across the Inlet
from Karbeethong looks basically white - and that is just one feeding zone for the bats.
