Subject: Latham's Snipe feeding

Usually snipe bury their beak so far into the mud or grass that it is hard
to know what they are doing with it. On Tuesday, a bird in front of Bittern
hide spent a short time gathering food near the surface of the mud, allowing
more of the beak action to be observed. The attached crop from a video frame
shows that it used the ability to bend the distal end of the upper beak
(rhychokinesis) during this feeding. While I have a lot of video of snipe
demonstrating rhychokinesis, this is the first time I have captured this
ability being used during the capture phase of feeding.

As you can tell from the photo, the mud was very sticky. Several times, the
bird used its foot to clean some of the mud off its beak.
