Philip, in the many times I have located and observed Koel fledglings, particularly in my local area, they always have been out of the nest, and I’ve never found the nest they may have been raised in, even when probably within my GBS site. As noted in
my ACT paper in the latest issue of CBN there are only around half a dozen times when they’ve been first recorded in the nest before fledging, which all suggests they are rather quiet in the nest.

Update: Just in the last half hour, I have my first Koel fledgling for the year in my GBS Site. Indeed only 1 metre from my bedroom window. Calling that persistent
slow “weep” call. It is mostly grown to independent size and with a tail is more than half grown, so not a very recent nest leaver. Being my first notice I expect it has come from outside my GBS area. Are Koel chicks noisy in the nest or only when they leave?

Same for me so far, even though there are several adults yelling here every morning and have been for weeks. I have not seen any young ones this year. Not
that I am out that much but I am home for most of every day. Only a small number of RW nestings and only RW chicks.

Not me.
We have not had a Koel fledgling in our bit of Turner. What is more, the very large amounts of Koel noise we had over Christmas/New Year has now subsided substantially. I was attempt to insert 'music' but that would be poetic licence.

After the flurry of postings after Xmas/early New Year there has been a lull of reporting of new Koel fledglings. I’m not sure if this reflects few being found or if they are not being
reported due to koel fledgling saturation syndrome.
I strongly suspect the latter as I now have 6 in Rivett/Chapman, after finding 2 within 75 m of each other this morning in a spot where I’ve now had them 3 years out of the last 4. RWB
confirmed host for one, and likely for the second.
Diana White has found at least 5 fledgling in a small area around her place in Narrabundah, and the one she reported originally has now been present in her garden for 22 days.
The above comprises over half of the 20 or so fledglings I’m aware of to date.
So if you have been observing koel fledglings but haven’t been reporting them on the chat line for fear of being branded a “me too”, I’d be very happy if you sent the details directly to
me.
