I went to ANBG this morning and paid for 90 minutes parking at ANBG. I went to what I believe the map shows for the Collared Sparrowhawk nest. I sat, and wandered
around for most of an hour along the path above the arid garden, to not make any hint of detection of either the CS or BG or their nests. Then I went further up the hill and eventually found the Collared Sparrowhawk nest with four chicks. Actually I could
not count whether there were 3 or 4. Mostly they were sitting low, with some shuffling about, so I saw their heads, wings or tails. They are still scruffy looking. Unfortunately with only about 10 minutes left and then needed to go do other things.
About my earlier message of a 100 metre distance between the 2 nests. I just made a rough guess from the map. But the Collared Sparrowhawk nest is further up
the hill from what I thought the map showed. From this and comments Adam wrote to me that the Brown Goshawk is further down the hill from what he thought the map showed, it is clear that the two nests are a lot more than 100 metres apart. Adam suggested 200
to 250 metres, which makes it less surprising than I had thought.

As in the message that Alison already forwarded. The map that Alison posted yesterday shows nearby nesting of Collared Sparrowhawk & Brown Goshawk at ANBG.
Could be less than 100 metres apart. I think that is very surprising. Do they tolerate each other? Why would they? I wonder whether anyone has seen any interactions between them. I may well be able to go there this week.

Hi Philip,
I have been watching these birds since October and had the identification verified on Canberra Nature Map.
Here is a clearer photo of the adult. I also met a number of birdos/photographers who all referred to this nest as a Sparrowhawk. There was also a Fantail Cuckoo near the Sparrowhawks.

That is interesting. To have them nesting in a Eucalypt, that is not typical. I believe, normally they use conifers or similar. I assume you are sure of the
identification. I can’t tell either way just from this photo. Another curious thing is how close is this nest to the Goshawk nest?

I had been watching the Collared Sparrowhawks visiting a nest at the Botanic Gardens back in October but there didn’t seem to be any chicks. They now have four chicks in the nest.
