We live in an apartment overlooking West Basin and see that flock of Little
Black Cormorants quite frequently. As Fleur says once they've landed on the
water they are difficult to count accurately! I'm glad she could see them in
flight. I have estimated 45+ each time I've seen them.

I have a few volunteer shifts at Floriade. Last Monday I was on the Ferry Gate
- just down from Regatta Point and close to the jetty - when I saw a large
number of little black cormorants fly from the west en masse and land on the
water. This was between the jetty and Rond terrace. It was difficult to count
them as they kept swimming around and diving. However they all decided to move
on within a few minutes, flying back towards the west in groups of up to a
dozen, so I was able to count 62.

Yesterday I saw a darter climb/walk up a tree adjacent to Nerang Pool. The tree
is on an angle of between 60 - 70 degrees, so the darter started from the
bottom and without too much difficulty was able to walk up the trunk and find a
roosting spot.

Alas, the reeds close to the western end of Nerang Pool seem to have largely
been cleared, so we are unlikely to see Floriade patrons being entertained by
swamphens feeding their chicks as they did in that location last year.
