The celebrated Strathnairn male has recently been seen in the vicinity of last year’s nest, so has evidently returned from the Northern Territory. A video camera has been installed at the nest. It remains to be seen whether the same nest
will be used again.
It’s therefore time to keep an eye out for any other possible nesting pairs. If you think you know of a possible nest site (eg an individual regularly around the same spot, or a pair flying together) you can either let me know for the
purpose of the annual Canberra Bird Notes summary, or advise Don Fletcher who is coordinating a more intensive monitoring exercise. There is no competition for getting this information, and all nesting data will be pooled in the end.
Last season we believe there were only two successful nests, one at Strathnairn and one at Campbell Park, but other birds were around at the same time at different locations and it is possible other nests were missed.
