Hi everyone

fyi

Several people responded to my post with an image of a bird, taken in Turner,
which I suggested might have been a Crimson Rosella with a bit of Yellow (or
Adelaide) Rosella in it. David Rees wrote of hybrid birds he had seen in Albury
and Noel Luff reported the Gundagai birds.

Leo Joseph wrote the following:

'The local Canberra Crimson Rosellas always look a bit different at this time
of year as they moult their worn plumage. I always do double takes on them at
this time of year but I think moult explains a lot of their suspicious
appearance. The bird in the photo shows lots of signs of moult. So I suspect
that it is more that than an indication of Yellow Rosella genes coming this
way. That said, we have known since the 1970s that Rosellas along the western
slopes of the Divide more or less along the Hume Highway do indeed present
pretty good evidence of being Adelaide-like Rosellas but I stress they are not
exactly like Adelaides. They almost certainly reflect hybridisation between
Crimson and Yellow following habitat disruption and can easily be seen in
Gundagai. We have pretty good evidence on that now. But you don't have to go
far east or west to get back into pretty straightforward Crimson and Yellow
Rosellas, respectively.
I think this is a reasonable assessment and do feel free to pass it on.'

regards

Con
