Those grebes (maybe 50 of them) presented an interesting spectrum of age and plumage-cycle differences. Mainly Hoary-headed with a salting of Australasian.
The very young chicks must have hatched on or near that water body. Below phots all on 4 Feb.

Thanks to all who gave me directions ad passed on information about the Painted Snipe/s at Lake Rd Dam. Len & I had success this afternoon ... we saw the female and I took some very
poor photos.
We noticed that the grebes there look much paler than those we have seen elsewhere. Is that just Hoary-headed non-breeding plumage?
