Hello Virginia - still keeping up with Canberra’s koels? Jack Holland has been keeping an overall eye on the seasonal reporting, so far as the spasmodic interest in this
species allows. I hear them around Griffith/Narrabundah most days, and have seen and heard a female a few times.
Male koels can be heard at Jerra wetlands most days, but the calling locations are limited by the scarcity of suitable calling trees - however the main hides precinct from
crake alley to the nature reserve HQ has had males and females during the past month.
The below was in the small but much-used dead tree on the west side of Jerra Creek south of the cycle path bridge and easily visible from it.
Pretty much a standard female. A trick of the light caused a passing resemblance to the rare dove that had been reported in the area, coincidentally.

Hi Geoffrey,
Where did you see this koel? Was it near your house or at a reserve?
Cheers,
Virginia

This is not a Diamond Dove -
I only mention it because that’s what I first thought the backlit bird was until it turned its head.
No chance of a mistake with a reasonable view - or photo
