At 19:45 hours yesterday we were startled by the loud call of a male koel in our White Cedar tree just 10 metres from an open window. A Magpie Lark and Crimson Rosella
sat quietly nearby, the latter calling a little. After 30 seconds the trio flew to a Box Elder in a neighbour’s yard returning immediately to the White Cedar accompanied by a Red Wattlebird. The Koel called while the others sat quiet. A minute later all flew
to a Silver Birch in a far corner of the garden where the Koel called very loudly every couple of minutes. We beseeched all avian gods the bastard wouldn’t bivouac the night. And being good children our prayers were answered after five minutes when all fell
quiet.
This is the first time we’ve noticed a koel in our Holt garden
