Interesting and spectacular, thanks for the link

Looks to me like the source may have been UHD video  -e.g. 4K video or better, taken at 30 frames a second or higher  with a fast exposure speed for each frame.  Each frame then extracted individually, then stacked in something like photoshop to make composite.

Doubt a traditional DSLR could easily take the source photos, though the current generation of video cameras could do it and a lot more if you have the money - like the new 'Red 8K Helium' which can be run at 30 fps at 8K  (8192 × 4320), for as long as you like, knocking out 30 images a sec at 35 mpix per frame.  Current Lumix mirrorless will do 4K - 8 mpix photos at 30 a second, a new body due next year is promising 6K -18 mpix images at 60 a second,

Given such developments I reckon that in a few years many 'action' photographers will discover they can take frames from UHD video rather than taking photos with traditional shuttered DSLRs.  The 'traditional way' will continue of course, but it will have a declining following. Makes one wonder about Canon/Nikon, they are not in front here, though their glassware, esp. that from Canon, will live on - stuck onto a very different device, as many video makers already do.
