Don’t know about if being common behaviour but connections of these 2 species have been observed before. Including some evidence of vocal mimicry between them.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Two Robins - Mulligan's

Hi Everyone,

Jill and I (separately) visited Mulligan's Flat today and had the same interesting sighting.

A female scarlet robin was in the company of  a red-capped robin (juvenile?). They appeared to be flying around together and the scarlet seemed to be behaving like a parent to the other.

Is it common behaviour for different species of robin to associate with one another? I haven't seen  examples of this before but my bird knowledge/experience is pretty limited.

Maybe it was just a coincidence, but it is interesting that Jill and I saw the same two birds and made similar observations of their behaviour.

Any thoughts/comments/information would be appreciated.

Attached is a photo of the two birds perched together.

Better photos of the two individual birds can been seen:

Cheers

Julie
