After a couple of near misses with the large number of feeding martins (mostly tree) and swallows at Jerrabomberra Wetlands this morning, I thought I would try to estimate how fast they were flying. Estimates from my videos are that the Tree Martins (the most common species today) were averaging 31kph (25-38) and the Welcome Swallows were slightly slower, averaging 26kph (22-28).

Catching small insects and avoiding moving humans while flying at this speed takes skill.
