I have been liaising with the people coordinating a large SE Australian Snipe survey (from Victoria), who carry out their surveys on three occasions over the Snipe season (between Sept and March). All of our survey dates
align well with their survey dates which is great as we will be able to compare data. However, our January date which is scheduled for the 21/22 January, does not line up. So it would be fantastic if you could now undertake the January survey on the weekend
of the 7th/8th January instead of the 21/22. [If anyone can survey both dates that would be brilliant but we understand you are giving up enough time already]. Whatever you can manage we will be happy with.
The other information they have asked for us to record to align with the bigger survey is the following:
wind, cloud, temperature, precipitation. and other information such as
wetland (rough) area, estimated depth, fringing vegetation and height. Also, importantly they have asked us to record
number of surveyors and distance traversed. I understand there is a space for this in eBird, but I am happy for you to email these details to directly to me and I will enter them.
Just a note to say thankyou to those now using eBird – it is certainly making my life easier in terms of consolidating the data (and minimizing emails coming in). For anyone not using eBird and who wants to, Alastair
is giving a COG workshop on how to use it at Jerrabomberra Wetlands on the 8th October at 8am (2 Dairy Rd Fyshwick). The invitation went out via Canberra Birds but if you didn’t see it let me know and I will give you the details.
Once again, I am happy with whatever you can manage. There are approximately 25 volunteers monitoring 30 sites across Canberra – basically every site where a Snipe has ever been recorded. An amazing effort by you all!!!!
