Certainly one of those 2. I also think a male Red-chested Button-quail looks like a better fit. On looking at HANZAB & Pizzey’s book, the Little Button-quail appears a bit paler and less strongly marked that this photo suggests. Pizzey’s text suggests a minor difference in beak colour that goes the other way but that is not supported by the drawings.

I’m going through my photos from a recent trip.  This pic I think by range is a Little or Red-chested Button Quail, and I’ve plumped for the latter based only on a bit of plumage behind the eye.  Can anyone ID it from this photo only? (never saw it again) and: Eastern edge of Northern Territory, savannah grassland, July, early morning, on a track ahead of the vehicle.

 

Thanks – it’s only important for curiosity and my list!
