The current (June 2016) issue of the Australian BirdLife magazine has a great article  'Same same but different' by Danny Rogers and Sean Dooley. It provides 'some helpful methods to identify that most perplexing bird group, the small terns'.

The article includes a hyper-useful table cross-tabulating the species by diverse points of identification.

The article coincides with the release of the BirdLife Australia tern identification guide My Tern, downloadable gratis from http://birdlife.org.au/projects/shorebirds-2020/counter-resources

Highly recommended - David
