Bill,

Are you mixed up there? The Robin’s species name is changed, sort of on a technicality. The Honeyeater’s name change is on the basis of an intention that it be shifted into the same genus as the Wattlebirds, rather than a genus of its own. Two unrelated items.

Why has the species name changed in addition to the re-classification  of the genus?

The bird will be interested to know that the authority on these matters states that boodang is:
'...from an Aboriginal word [language unspecified]: Lesson (1827) stated that the natives of the country around 'Sidney' call the bird 'bouddang' (though he spelt it 'booddang' in his French common name)'. FYI

On 30 May 2016 the ACT Minister for Environment, Simon Corbell:

Updated the scientific name of the Scarlet Robin from *Petroica multicolor to Petroica boodang.

The scientific name of the Regent Honeyeater is also updated from Xanthomyza phrygia to Anthochaera phrygia.

These updates reflect the naming used in the Australian Faunal Directory (ABRS 2009. Australian Faunal Directory.

Australian Biological Resources Study, Canberra. Viewed 07 April 2016.

*The Scarlet Robin re-naming was also as a result of a recommendation from the ACT’s Scientific Committee.
