Judy raises an interesting point. How many large flocks of YTBC are there
in Canberra? Indeed one could ask how many individual YTBCs.
It occurs to me that here is an interesting research project. I would be
fairly certain that the observation that started this chain, a flock of
40+ YTBCs flying from Percival Hill towards Giralang, is the same flock
that I see on or near PH nearly every day at the moment. But I would be
very unsure indeed about the flock that roosts at Uriarra. IF they are the
same flock then they are probably over-reported and there are fewer in
Canberra than seem to be observed.
It is a very neat little research project for someone and then worth a
piece in CBN. They don¹t fly very fast and it should not be TOO difficult
to follow a flock, even by car - let alone catching a bird and using a
GPS device of some kind. But even without a device it should not be too
hard. They don¹t seem to me to fly far without coming down to roost. Not
around here anyway. The fly regularly from PH to the pines on the Barton
Highway and back. Cheers
John
