Tracking birds from Canberra
Part of the project includes satellite tracking of birds from Canberra.
The ACT Government has put forward $25,000 towards the monitoring of three birds, and the ACT Woodlands and Wetlands Trust hopes to fit trackers to six birds in total this summer.
"These satellite tracking devices will give us daily records of where the birds are turning up over a one- to two-year period," Mr Cummings said.
"It will not only look at their local movements in and around Canberra and the region, but when one bird goes from Jerrabomberra Wetlands down to Victoria and back, and when they leave on their journey back to Japan as well."
The Japanese are also aiming to track 18 birds out of Hokkaido.
In addition to the tracking devices, there will be community survey days held in Canberra over summer.
"We basically go to a bunch of sites at the same time on the same day and do a survey for Latham's snipe so we can get a handle on what is the local population at one particular point in time," Mr Cummings said.
"The link back to the satellite tracking will be where those birds are going locally and will give us insights into where we should be setting up those surveys."
