odd behaviour among the lorikeets in my yard early this morning. 14 rainbow lorikeets (not unusual, numbers are building) and a single musk lorikeet flew into my red gum at about 7.30. usually the birds are noisy but friendly to each other - have often observed the musk and a rainbow doing some mutual preening. however, this morning every time the musk lorikeet sidled up to a rainbow it was chased away. none of them seemed to want anything to do with it. after about 10 minutes the whole noisy group flew away again together
