Martin/John,  in his presentation to COG last week, local raptor expert Jerry Olsen outlined several things which sets the Powerful Owl apart from other Australian owls, one of which being that it takes its prey exclusively from the canopy.  Thus anything on the ground be it carrion or live rabbits would not be taken.

Powl has dropped a sugar glider and a substantial portion of a sugar glider and not retrieved them, perhaps indicating a reluctance to pick up food from the ground. If this is correct, feeding on carrion would be most unlikely. It has not been seen with a rabbit, although plenty of young ones are close by.

There has been an interesting discussion on birding-aus today about whether Powls eat carrion.  The conclusion is that they don't.  (Our specimen wasn't feeding on anything this morning but sitting up in its usual tree looking Powerful.)

I then read Rosemary's question about whether the 'burbs are inundated with Ravens.  The reason Acton is inundated with Ravens is because they are feeding on dead carp.
