In the course of preparing a little talk on the Birds of Black Mountain I was taking a look at the painting of that hill prepared in 1911 for the information of participants in the design competition. This is incorporated in the ‘cyclorama’
painted by Robert Coulter on display in the Regatta Point exhibition. The paintings are sufficiently detailed to show cows grazing on the river flats for example. Taking a closer look I was surprised to see birds flying across the face of Black Mountain
had been included, these being, clearly enough I think, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos. One wonders what the Griffins would have made of it.
