Outing to Lake Tuggeranong

I am assuming that you saw such a nomenclature for Anas gracilis in the linked list to my message about today's outing.   If so there are various explanations that I can see for this.

1. Some dumb taxonomist in Australia has decided that should be the common name for the species.
   
2. Your computer has decided that after November this year The Donald is going to be ruling the entire world and has spelt the colour midway been black and white in a way that would please the Future Lord of All.
   
3. EBird is an American system using the work of Mr Clements and thus, although I have told it I am reporting in true-blue Strine (about which it is quite happy), when other people, without an eBird account access the checklist they get badly spelt stuff.
   

Since what I see is "Grey Teal" I suspect option 3 is the anser (sorry, answer) which is good as there are two solutions.

• The quick solution is that you have an eBird account and set your language preferences to English (Australian).  That may not get all names exactly how your former boss nay like them but would at least get rid of any Uncle Samisms such as the wrong vowel in grey.
  
• The slower solution - which is probably more user friendly for casual users of eBird, who don't wish to open an eBird account - is for me to raise with eBird the prospect that when a record is entered in a language it is output in the same language.  I shall do this, but don't hold your breath waiting for a result, since I suspect it'll involve a fair bit of work.

A formal trip report on today's outing to Lake Tuggeranong is on the COG website.  The editors of Gang-gang may wish to use that as the the trip report.  The bird list with counts etc can be accessed here.  I have compiled a blog post including some snaps and the expected witty repartee.

 

The March outing will be on 16 March 2016 with details on the COG website.  The editors of Gang-gang may wish to include that in the forthcoming trips area.
