Koels are beginning to turn up regularly in Carwoola: at least one was in the area for a week in December 2015 and they have been recorded most years recently.  I have also had informal reports of them being seen in Wamboin, by folk who don't report things in an organised way.

Indeed, as noted in The GBS Report:

Common Koel Eudynamys scolopacea

This cuckoo has arrived here increasingly in recent years, ............ They seem to inhabit only the suburbs locally and are the only species recorded in the GBS not to be recorded in bush areas around Canberra (except twice, COG Atlas & 1999-2000 ABR). They are probably attracted by fruit, that is not available in woodlands...........

My comments of 14 years ago are still very appropriate even though the species has dramatically increased since then and become a regular local breeder.

I am just now writing up the Eastern Koel for the Annual Bird Report.

Unlike coal, this species is going up and up and up in the ACT.

An interesting sidelight on the data is that it seems to be heading straight for the bright city lights of the Big Smoke: there are still no WOO records, for example.

Perhaps, as Jack's post suggests, when migrating they may return to their favourite places.
