In the the camaraderie of the new year, 2016 , I wish to commend an excellent
article appearing in December 2015 of Australian Birdlife ( vol 4 No 4 ) .
Something I always wondered about was whether these birds were in almost
continuous flight and did they actually roost at dusk.
We now learn (Matthew Stanton research in the Pilliga Scrub ) that the main
predator is owls, including the barking variety that picks them off the
vertical tree trunks which their special foot configuration enables them to
stay secure safely.
One can only wonder if the on- going research into pellet analysis etc., could
establish that
powerful owls also predate on this rather rare migrant.
Very interesting also to read about the ariel displays because it was at Wonga,
Bawley Point, that a highlight of my bird watching career occurred, about 300
needle tails performing in a acrobatic coordinated acrobatic display.
Now for the commercial, as programmed COG is visiting Wonga again mid- week
8-11/3/2016 and there are still vacancies for camping or accommodation in
comfortable cottages to avoid possible later disappointment you should enquire
sooner rather than later.
