Apparently usually produced by the nymphs of a group of bugs known as spittlebugs or froghoppers. The nymphs use the foam to protect them from predators and provide some protection from temperature extremes. Can be found on many native and exotic species -
I've noticed it on grevilleas and weeds along the Murrumbidgee
