Just on this, I suggest either one of the true quails (Brown or Stubble) or probably more likely, Painted Button-quail.

I was down at the Lower Molonglo Nature Reserve yesterday evening walking the dogs and startled two birds ... very much like pigeons with the noisy wingbeat and waiting until the last minute before leaping out of the bushes to take flight.

 

They were smaller that Common Bronzewings, maybe slightly larger than Crested Pigeons and appeared predominantly brown though I didn't get a good look at them. But 95% certain they weren't Cresteds or Bronzewings and certainly not a feral Rock or Spotted.

 

Ideas?
