The below exchange is forwarded with Mat's consent to answer possible
questions about the eBird system. The point about choice of regional
English names has been addressed elsewhere. gd

Hi Geoffrey,

eBird help files are pretty good, and this one is a good place to start.
http://help.ebird.org/customer/portal/articles/1055676
Figure 1 shows you the backroom view of the filters - with allowable counts
varying throughout the year.

This is not surprising given that eBird originates from USA where
seasonality is extreme.
Cheers
Mat

Very interesting Mat - I'll pass that on if you don't mind. But is the
seasonal nature of the designation explained anywhere? g

I think "rare" is justified.
How many Koel have you seen in June in Canberra?
If you try again in the summer months the system will not think it is rare
(clever system for predictable migrants like this one)

Cheers
Mat

Yes of course thanks Mat. David has asked why 'Australian Koel' comes up as
'RARE'? g

Sorry - just re-read your question.

The reason for "Australasian" in Clements is because of "Gymnorhina tibicen
papuana" which occurs in the "SE New Guinea (Trans-Fly lowlands)".

I would not choose the same name, but it is sensible nonetheless.

Cheers
Mat

Is there a reason for this Mat? g

Indeed "Australasian Magpie" is quite silly. Surely just a data entry error
or is there any real reason for it. The magpie of Europe lives in Asia and
is also called Eurasian Magpie.

Have you tried out the new eBird iOS app? It works just like BirdLog ANZ,
makes data entry a breeze, tho I have yet to test its offline checklist
capacity, a problem with BirdLog.

It uses the Clements taxonomy & nomenclature, so we get oddities like Gray
Teal and Australasian Magpie.

Highly recommended - David
