The latest Decision Point has an interesting article about the worse-than-realised chances for threatened nomadic birds, and the role of citizen science in further research on this.  I cottoned on to it because these thoughts had occurred to me when observing Flock Bronzewings and not observing Letter-winged Kites around Birdsville.
