The following message is from campaigner Debbie Lustig. There is a link at end to a petition to the Victorian premier, asking for a ban on duck shooting. sandra h __________________ Duck hunting is cruel. And this year, it's unsustainable. The Victorian government has mandated a a full, 12-week duck season commencing this Saturday, 21 March. In its own press release, it conceded "Below average rainfall for the past two years has reduced duck numbers and habitat." Shooters will still be allowed a 10-duck bag on opening day and five on every other day of the season. Two Blue-winged Shovelers can be taken on opening day; one every day thereafter. Then there are the protected and endangered species shot. For 30 years, Coalition Against Duck Shooting rescuers have found all kinds of protected birds shot: Freckled Ducks, Blue-billed Ducks, swans, spoonbills, coots, swamphens, plovers et al. The fact is, all kinds of birds are shot, regardless of compulsory waterfowl ID testing. Is duck shooting a sport? Is it sustainable? Is it humane? Please inform yourself and make up your own mind. I personally want Victorian wetlands to be safe for birdwatching between March and June (and free of shooting litter the rest of the year).
