Much smaller number of FFs enlivening the occasion at the twilight event at Commonwealth Park yesterday.  I am reminded of the exchange with Gareth Evans (Cth A-G) during the Tasmanian Dam episode –

Great Australian Environmental Moments

Self:  We could use the flying fox pylon as a reference point for the declaration

GE:  What?  There’s a flying fox pile-on down there?

Self:  Yes – they built a flying fox pylon by the river

GE: Oh – you mean it’s a man-made thing?

I've just spent a few very pleasant days at Mallacoota.  Those thinking of heading that direction (or to Eden/Green Cape) might note that there are major road work happening on Brown Mountain and that road will be closed from 16th to 20th March inclusive.  One lane is closed this week and will again be shut off from 21 March to 3 Apr.  I suggest checking with the RTA site before setting out, although that only gives details for working days.

If wanting good topographic maps of the Mallacoota area the local vendor is the Mallacoota newsagent.

There were very few waders around at Bastion Point and the bush seemed dry.  White-headed pigeons were a highlight and there were many Lorikeets feeding on the Angophora blossom.  This has also attracted Grey-headed Fruit Bats: the colony is estimated as 20,000 animals which made a spectacular sight at 1945 when they flew past our accommodation to feed.  (Apparently in the drought there were up to 100,000 bats in the colony.)
