Minox are worth consideration too. I have 10 x 42s which 5 years ago were around $400, roof prism, waterproof, humidity proof &c. When they broke (inexplicable failure of one of the lugs for the straps) they sent me a new pair.

Looks to me like Vanguard and Vortex are both good and both reasonably priced. The best recommendation is that someone has and likes them and now the purchaser has two good options.

For the last year I have been using a quality set of Zeiss Terra bins which I bought online from Dirt Cheap Cameras for over $700 now reduced to about $650. As I am on their email list I note they stock the well recommended Vanguard brand for under $300. Hope this helps. Terry, the powl man now on the ABC

A new member of the banding team is keen to purchase a set of good quality, but reasonably cheap, binoculars. I know this subject is often on various chat lines in Australia but it is always, in my opinion, worth asking people directly what they use, how good (or bad!!) are they, which ones to avoid and what did they cost. Could you please include Hannah in any reply to me please.
