Hi. I am a pensioner on a low budget and got some advice about 2 years ago. On that basis I bought a pair of Vortex Diamondback binoculars. 8 x 42, the usual birding size, for under $300 online.
They are excellent. I cannot imagine what a more expensive pair would do that these don’t. And they come with a no questions asked lifetime warranty including dropped, water damage or whatever.
Vortex doesn’t get mentioned much in articles recommending birding binoculars but I think that is because they are not well known. Vortex is a US company specialising in rifle scopes and is highly regarded in that speciialist area.
So that’s my suggestion. They have their own higher priced range too but 2 years on I am completey happy with what I have. John

Subject: [canberrabirds] Good quality, cheap binoculars
Hi all,
A new member of the banding team is keen to purchase a set of good quality, but reasonably cheap, binoculars. I know this subject is often on various chat lines in Australia but it is always, in my opinion, worth asking people directly
what they use, how good (or bad!!) are they, which ones to avoid and what did they cost. Could you please include Hannah in any reply to me please.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
