I have been advised that a number of people are having problems accessing the detailed data using the ‘More detail’ button on the summary data on the COG web site (summary data for Australian Bittern  with the button at the top of the page http://canberrabirds.org.au/wp-content/BirdSummaryData/Australasian%20Bittern.pdf) . This is usually because the default readers used by the web browsers do not support the technology used to create the link to the detailed data. The solution is to change the PDF reader used by the browser to Acrobat Reader. Instructions on how to do this for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are below. If you are using some other browser and are having similar problems I can provide specific instructions if you need them.

If you are unable to fix the problem, one way to access the detailed data is to access the summary document for the species and then change the word ‘Summary’ in the address showing in your browser to ‘Detail’, as in the address shown below for the Australian Bittern detailed data, and press enter.

Please contact me if you still experiencing problems with accessing the summary or detailed data on the COG web site.

Mozilla Firefox

In your browser:

  1. Click the menu button New
                Fx Menuand choose Options

.

  1. Select the Applications panel.
  2. Find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list and click on it to select it.
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Action column for the above entry and select Use Adobe Reader (default).

Click OK to close the Options window

Google Chrome

1.      Open Google Chrome

2.      Enter chrome://plugins in the address bar (see figure 1)

3.      Click on ‘Disable’  below Chrome PDF Viewer. It should change to look like the greyed entry half way down figure 1

4.      If Adobe reader is in the list (see bottom of screen shot), click on ‘enable’ below the name

5.      Close and restart Google Chrome

You may get a messages like ‘Adobe reader needs your permission to run’ and ‘Always run on this site’ when you view the first PDF. Click yes for these questions to allow your computer to use this product to view PDFs.
