Re sharpness, the 10x42s are in the "L series" which means the best lenses Canon can make.  Tack sharp.

They're not the sharpest, but the image stabilisation more than makes up for it … absolutely love them.

The images are _extremely_ sharp in my set.  Also Canon Australia currently has the prices discounted ($599 for the 10x30s): http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/Personal/Products/More-Products/Binoculars .  You can save more from some of the "grey" sites, but their reliability and trustworthiness seems to vary.
