I have the Canon 12x36 image stabilised … I have 20/20 eyesight so I didn't want anything less than 10x as it wouldn't really augment my vision enough to warrant carrying them around.

They're not the sharpest, but the image stabilisation more than makes up for it … absolutely love them.

I recently went mad and bought a pair of Canon image stabilised binocs.  Because I also use them for looking at the night sky, I chose the 10x42 units.  The effect of the stabilisation is remarkable. At 7x it's not really necessary but at 10x and above the lack of jitter is really great for seeing more fine detail (stars or birds).

There's a very thorough review of all models by Gary Seronik here: http://www.garyseronik.com/?q=node/25 Seronik likes the 10x30 for bird watching (weight 600 g compared to my 10x42s at 1030g).

The images are _extremely_ sharp in my set.  Also Canon Australia currently has the prices discounted ($599 for the 10x30s): http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/Personal/Products/More-Products/Binoculars .  You can save more from some of the "grey" sites, but their reliability and trustworthiness seems to vary.

For info.
