Michael’s below photos show at least 2 and possibly 4 different individuals. In the M1 bird(s) the red is limited to the crest and forehead. In M2c it is the most extensive, and that bird appears to have a different bill colour. One possibility is the difference is attributable to different brood years, that is the difference between M1 and M2 could be 10 months. This seems unlikely. If different broods from the last season, the difference could be about 3 months. In any event, all birds would be at least 8 months which makes it unlikely any are red-crested females. That would make it necessary to develop another hypothesis to account for the preponderance of apparent juvenile males - of which this is a particularly striking example.
