I was intrigued by Michael Maconachie’s report of 5 young male Gang-gangs together in his back-yard.  He has now sent me photos.  When I showed some images to a COG mtg I mentioned that the juv moult/plumage pattern was not fully understood, and there was an unexplained high proportion of juv males reported. Below, by way of example, are two groups of 2 birds from a post –breeding period (Feb-April) in different years.  Each of the 2 was part of a group of 3 birds each of which had red or reddish feathers in the head.  Some had orange and cream tips to the breast feathers (arrows - a female character).  I speculated that female fledglings might have reddish feathers in the head (< say 4 months), to be lost in the course of the juvenile year.  Information from breeders is inconclusive on this.
