With the advantage of larger images that Matt kindly sent me, I'd be fairly confident this is a sparrowhawk, possibly a female from the relatively stout build.   I don't think the tail is much use from the angle and the tips being very worn.  The 'legs' are very thin and there is the classically elongated and thin toe. I would describe the eyes as 'buttony' notwithstanding that little ridge above that the sparrowhawk certainly has.

Matthew Higgins here.  Saw this bird just now on western side of Mt Ainslie (and heard its mate).  Steph and I are tending toward collared sparrowhawk, rather than goshawk.  What do people think?
