Hi All
Although outside the COG Area of Interest I thought I'd post this in case some
of you may be interested.
We camped overnight in Taleeban Mining Reserve, between Rankin Springs and
Weethalle in central NSW. All up we recorded 42 species of birds, 4 mammal
species and 4 reptile species.
The bird diversity was down on my previous two trips to the reserve in the past
10 years. Even so highlights this time were good views of Shy Heathwren on two
separate occasions, Australian Owlet-nightjars and Tawny Frogmouths calling at
night (both also seen with the frogmouth in a very exposed perch and the
owlet-nightjar hawking over our heads while spotlighting), Hooded Robin,
Splendid and Variegated Fairy-wrens, Little Eagle, White-browed Woodswallow,
Rainbow Bee-eater, Crested Bellbird, Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo, Babblers, Mulga
Parrot and Mallee form of Spotted Pardalote (two active nesting holes found
with attentive parents bringing food). The reptiles included Shingleback, a
Ctenotus skink and a Ramphotyphlops (Blind Snake). There were also plenty of
signs that Echidnas were present.
Although generally dry there was signs of some recent rain and a few plants
were flowering, including the odd Ironbark, a Grevillea sp., mintbush and I
think Mallee Blue Flower.
A stop at Reefton State Forest on the way back produced a number of good dry
forest/woodland birds including White-browed Babbler, Brown Treecreeper, Dusky
Woodswallow and Sacred Kingfisher. And at Stockinbingal we had our only Superb
Parrots of the trip.
